Oman Turns to Moringa as Strategic Crop for Climate Action

Salalah: In coordination with the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries, and Water Resources, the Ministry of Housing and Urban Planning signed a usufruct agreement on Wednesday to launch an investment project focused on cultivating Moringa trees in the Hanfit area of Thumrait in the Dhofar Governorate.
Spanning an area of 10.5 million square metres, the project involves an investment exceeding OMR 5.3 million.
The signing ceremony was attended by HH Sayyid Marwan Turki Al Said, Governor of Dhofar; Dr. Khalfan Said Al Shuaili, Minister of Housing and Urban Planning; Dr. Saud Hamoud Al Habsi, Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Water Resources; along with representatives from Trufud, the company overseeing project implementation.
This pioneering initiative integrates agriculture with manufacturing and supply chain development. It aligns with Omanโs broader strategy to encourage sustainable agricultural investment and strengthen national food security.
The project is projected to generate annual revenues between OMR 4 million and OMR 5 million through the export of moringa-based products to markets in North America, Europe, Asia, and beyond.
Additionally, it is expected to create over 500 direct jobs, along with numerous opportunities in supply, packaging, and logisticsโsupporting local entrepreneurship and economic growth.
From an environmental perspective, the initiative aims to plant approximately 15 million Moringa trees, which will collectively absorb more than 400,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide each year. This supports Omanโs efforts to combat climate change and advance the objectives of Oman Vision 2040.
Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)
What is a usufruct contract?
A usufruct contract allows a party to use land or property owned by the government or another entity for a set period, without owning it. In Oman, such contracts are often used to promote private investment in agriculture and industry, while the land remains under state ownership.
