Punjab Enhances Cotton Quality to Meet Global Market Standards

LAHORE, June 26 (APP): Punjab’s Provincial Minister for Agriculture & Livestock, Syed Ashiq Hussain Kirmani, attended a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signing ceremony between the Agriculture Department Punjab and the Better Cotton Initiative (BCI) as the chief guest at Agriculture House on Thursday.

Secretary Agriculture Punjab, Iftikhar Ali Sahoo, along with senior government officials and representatives from public and private sector organizations, was also present at the event.

The MoU was officially signed by Chaudhry Abdul Hameed, Director General Agriculture (Extension) Punjab, and Dr. Muhammad Qadeer of BCI.

Additionally, a service agreement was signed by Hassan Akram from the Food Security & Agriculture Center of Excellence (FACE) and Jaudat Ayaz from Ba-Khabar Kissan, representing their respective organizations.

Minister Kirmani highlighted the economic significance of cotton as a major cash crop for Pakistan and stressed the need to adopt modern agricultural techniques.

“This MoU is a foundational step in our strategy to enhance cotton production and uplift farmer incomes,” he remarked.

As part of the collaboration, the Punjab Agriculture Department and BCI will work together on improving cotton productivity.

Key initiatives will include establishing demonstration plots, training farmers, promoting responsible pesticide use, and implementing efficient water management practices.

The project also seeks to improve traceability and the quality of cotton to meet international standards.

In parallel, a digital service agreement was signed between FACE and Ba-Khabar Kissan.

This initiative will deliver AI-powered support through a mobile application, offering timely weather alerts, pest warnings, and productivity insights to nearly 500,000 Kissan Card holders.

The platform will also enable real-time monitoring and data-driven decision-making.

The minister further revealed that a comprehensive agricultural planning framework is being developed for the upcoming fiscal year.

This strategy will provide technical and financial assistance to strengthen public-private partnerships in priority crop sectors—starting with cotton and eventually expanding to wheat and other major crops.

Secretary Iftikhar Ali Sahoo reaffirmed the department’s dedication to promoting technological innovation in agriculture. He called for a collaborative approach among stakeholders to address ongoing challenges in cotton farming.
